Mechanisms of Microbial Pathogenicity

چکیده

The Boyden monograph should be available to every anatomist, thoracic surgeon, and diagnostician. It has occurred to this reviewer that a condensed version of the text, including only those sections concerned with surface anatomy and bronchial patterns, would be of great practical value to otolaryngologists and radiologists who are less frequently concerned with the finer anatomical details of the pulmonary vasculature.

Microbial pathogenesis: genomics and beyond.

The growing number of complete microbial genome sequences provides a powerful tool for studying the biology of microorganisms. In combination with assays for function, genomic-based approaches can facilitate efficient and directed research strategies to elucidate mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity. As genomic information accrues, the challenge remains to construct a picture of the biology th...

Evolution of microbial virulence: the benefits of stress.

Although genome sequencing of microbial pathogens has shed light on the evolution of virulence, the drivers of the gain and loss of genes and of pathogenicity islands (gene clusters), which contribute to the emergence of new disease outbreaks, are unclear. Recent experiments with the bean pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola illustrate how exposure to resistance mechanisms acts as the...

Cumulative Autoimmunity: T Cell Clones Recognizing Several Self-Epitopes Exhibit Enhanced Pathogenicity

T cell receptor (TCR) recognition is intrinsically polyspecific. In the field of autoimmunity, recognition of both self- and microbial peptides by a single TCR has led to the concept of molecular mimicry. However, findings made by our group and others clearly demonstrate that a given TCR can also recognize multiple distinct self-peptides. Based on experimental data we argue that recognition of ...

Draft Genome Sequences of Seven Streptococcus agalactiae Strains Isolated from Camelus dromedarius at the Horn of Africa

We present draft whole-genome sequences of seven Streptococcus agalactiae strains isolated from Camelus dromedarius in Kenya and Somalia. These data are an extension to the group B Streptococcus (GBS) pangenome and might provide more insight into the underlying mechanisms of pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance of camel GBS.

The Iron age of host-microbe interactions.

Microbes exert a major impact on human health and disease by either promoting or disrupting homeostasis, in the latter instance leading to the development of infectious diseases. Such disparate outcomes are driven by the ever-evolving genetic diversity of microbes and the countervailing host responses that minimize their pathogenic impact. Host defense strategies that limit microbial pathogenic...

Molecular Koch's postulates applied to microbial pathogenicity.

Microbial genetics and molecular cloning now permit us to routinely isolate specific genes from a variety of microbial pathogens. Obviously not all genes from pathogenic microorganisms play a role in pathogenicity or virulence. Just as Koch's postulates were formulated to identify the causal relationship between an organism and a specific disease, the notion is presented here that a form of mol...
